Hey everyone, this story is a part of my IBM Data Engineering Professional Certificate series. I have enrolled into a Professional Certificate course on Coursera to enhance my skillset as a Data Engineer and would like to share my experience with you.
Are you someone that is looking for a new career path and not sure if Data Engineering is your right choice? You are in the right place if you are choosing this course. The course gives a nice overview of the requirements to become a Data Engineer, the challenges you may encounter and so on.
Please keep in mind, if you are just curious to know about Data Engineering, I highly recommend you to opt for Auditing the course which will be free of cost but you will not be able to access any of the assignments or Quizes.
The course content is divided into 4 weeks. Let us take a brief look at the outcomes of each week.

Week 1
The first week content gives an overview about Data Engineering, what are the key concepts involved in Data Engineering. How Data is used differently for different end-users. You will also learn about Responsibilities and Skillset of Data Engineer.
In this week of the course, you will create an IBM Cloud account that will be used to complete labs in upcoming modules.
Week 2
You will get introduced to types of data i.e., Structured, Semi-Structured and Unstructured. By the end of this week, you will be able to understand the types of file formats and sources for different types of data.
A brief overview of Data Repositories, RDBMS and NoSQL databases. You will also get introduced to Big Data.
Week 3
In this week, you will have a chance to get to other topics of Data Engineering such as Data Architecture, Data Storage, Data Transformations, Data Cleaning and Data Governance.
There are couple of things that is not good on Coursera platform. I am not sure if it is platform related but you will have module quizzes. If there are 3 questions, I don’t know how come 70% passing score is helpful. It can be either 33.33% or 66.66% or 100%, 50%,60% doesn’t make sense. The passing score should be based on number of questions and shouldn’t be default. I hope that Coursera fixes that issue.
At the end of the course, you will receive a shareable badge and certificate.
